I would venture to say that familiar pathways both for the feet and the mind, are appealing because they allow us to feel nothingness. Mindless and mindful seem like they are the same thing. Thoughtless bliss. But what if that familiar pathway is actually quite terrible to walk on? Gravely and smelly and up hill both ways? There is still a tendency to seek it out. Maybe even more so in order to master it.
But if seeking nothingness, the chaos of the mind in a new situation is where it is really "at". Unable to comprehend, the senses take over and we are reborn. This gives me insight into why I do life how I do. You simply won't catch me doing the same thing for long, and while it seems only obvious on the job front--I have a new one annually it seems--and has even been named by friends as responsible gigging, it is actually a more general "responsible" appreciation for chaos, with a tip of the hat to the worlds need for order.
